About Jennie

Calm, practical, and on your side

I'm Jennie Saunders

Founder of The Dedicated Downsizer.

My work focuses on one of the most complex stages of later life: deciding what to do as you get older - stay in your home, move somewhere smaller or move into care. I support older people and their families through the practical and emotional complexity of later life home decisions.

I began my career as an Occupational Therapist, helping people return home safely after illness, adapt their houses to suit changing needs, or move into properties that worked better for them. For the past 12 years, I’ve worked alongside older adults in their own homes - supporting them to live well, maintain independence and navigate the changes that come with later life often through big transitions such as moving into care, relocating to be closer to family, or downsizing to something more manageable.

Why I do this work

Over time I began to notice something.

Many capable people were quietly overwhelmed by this stage of life and the decisions that come with it. They would often say,

“I must sort that out… but not today.”

It became clear that people weren’t lacking motivation — they simply didn’t know where to begin, what help to ask for, or quite how large the task had become.

I realised there was a gap.

Families care deeply, but they are often emotionally involved and managing busy lives of their own.
Health and care services quite rightly focus on medical needs and safety.

Yet there is very little support that sits in between.

Decluttering services exist, but the reality is that sorting a lifetime of belongings, preparing a home for change, and navigating later-life housing decisions involves far more than decluttering alone.

Anyone who has tried to tackle the spare room, the loft, or even a single cupboard knows the feeling: you start with good intentions, only to find yourself exhausted, overwhelmed and unsure how to move forward.

In my work I increasingly found myself stepping into that space, supporting people to think things through, make decisions, and gradually move forward when the time was right.

The Dedicated Downsizer grew out of that work.

It is a specialist service shaped by professional grounding, hands-on experience, and a clear understanding of how health, home and family dynamics intersect.

Most people assume they will know when the right time to make changes has arrived. In reality, many people delay until a sudden event — illness, a fall, bereavement, or a crisis, forces urgent decisions.

My aim is to help people approach these transitions earlier, more calmly and with the right support in place...

Many people put off thinking about their future at this stage because:

They don’t know where to start with a lifetime of belongings.

The physical effort feels too much.

Everything still feels manageable.

Letting go of possessions brings guilt.

They worry about making the wrong decision.

They’re grieving a partner, or adjusting after one has gone into care.

That’s why I do this work: to bring clarity, structure and calm support to what can otherwise feel overwhelming.

“We had no idea where to start, now we wish we’d called sooner!”

“We’d been putting off downsizing for years because it just felt too big to tackle. Jennie came in with a plan, a smile, and an endless supply of patience. She broke the process into manageable steps, and suddenly everything started to feel possible. We honestly wish we’d reached out sooner.”

Many of the families I work with first make contact through an adult son or daughter who is trying to help their parents navigate these decisions.

Why choose me

What makes my approach different:

  • Professional understanding of later-life transitions - with a background in occupational therapy and more than 20 years supporting older adults, I understand how health, mobility and the home environments interact as needs change in later life.

  • Guidance through complex decisions - later-life housing decisions involve many moving parts. I help people work through them step by step, bringing structure and clarity so progress becomes possible without everything feeling overwhelming.

  • Support across the whole process - from the early thinking stage through to preparing a home, coordinating professionals and managing move day, I support each stage of the transition so nothing important is overlooked..

  • Calm support for families - later-life decisions can be emotional for everyone involved. I help families stay focused, reduce tension and move forward with decisions that feel right for the poeple at the centre of the change.

  • Practical, hands-on help when it's needed - Some clients just want a clear plan. Others share the work with me or ask me to manage much of the practical process. Support is always tailored to your situation.

My Purpose

Downsizing is never just about property. It’s about people, memories, and the courage to move forward.

My role is to guide you through that process with clarity, structure and calm support - helping you and your family make decisions with confidence and move forward at a pace that feels manageable.

Whether you’re planning ahead or facing a more urgent move, I bring the experience and steady guidance needed to help the next chapter begin well.

If you're begnnong to think about these decisions, or simply feel unsure where to start, the first step is often just a conversation. Many people begin with a Downsizing Planning Session to talk through their situation and understand their options.
